Today is Ash Wednesday and we went to mass this morning as a family.
As Mass was ending, you could smell the aroma of incense. You traditional catholics know what I'm talking about - the smell that transports you back to your own childhood memories of Mass on Sundays that always had the aroma of incense wafting through church.
For our kids, it's a rare thing to be exposed to what I consider a very traditional scent in those great cathedrals back in Chicago.
Anyway, at the end of Mass today they were setting up for the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, something that involves continual devotional prayer by parishioners throughout the Lenten season. As they were doing this, Father Kevin was waving the incense burner and the aroma travelled throughout the church.
Dominick looked at me and said, "What is that smell?". I told him it was incense, something that is burned in the church as a ritual offering or prayer. He then said, "That's not so good".
2.2 seconds later Matteo says, "Mommy, what is that smell of cooking ham?"
5 seconds later Anna pinches her nose and says "Mommy, I really can't take that smell"
Oh yes, I'm Catholic and this just cracked me up.
