Fun & Freedom at 40

Yes, it's true. I officially turned the big 4-0 on August 25th.

A glimpse of birthday muffin fun, a family tradition in our household, the morning of my birthday.

I'm not really sure what all the fuss is about. For me this birthday has given me some sort of permission to do what I feel is important and fun, without much consideration in wondering if I should spend the time here or there doing what I think is enjoyable.

Weird, I know. I'm a Mom - I'm not all that great at doing what I want very often or just being impulsive with what is important to me. I'm sure some time on a couch somewhere would cure that, or just having my 40th birthday seems to have done the trick.

I am enjoying this type of free-wheeling thought: "Hey, I've always wanted to do a night in Seattle with some girl friends, wouldn't that be fun?". So off we went for some fun in Seattle with dinner at The Pink Door and spent the night at a great hotel. I've also had really cool random acts of kindness from my beloved friends - flowers & gifts on my doorstep, dinner and great conversation time, hiking time (and the babysitting too!), a cool quilting book, and even a palm tree for my deck. I consider myself so very blessed with all the love and friendship that I have in life.

Don has spoiled me tons - fun with the party in Chicago, birthday treats and gifts from the kids on my actual birthday and a wonderfully romantic dinner this past Saturday at The Met.

We look like we're going on a date, don't we?!

What is it about 40? Why do people think it's some horrific milestone? Why is it as if you fall off a cliff of some sort? Or something that requires huge fanfare? I don't know the answer.

I do know this: It's as if someone (Father Time?) has granted permission for me to do things I love and enjoy - spending time with my husband, my kids, my family, and great friends. All of this happens normally, but this past month or so has been loaded with fun, love, and laughter, all in a condensed time frame. For me, that is the huge fanfare.

Whatever it is, these things - fun, love, laughter, and time with those I love - are gifts that capture my heart and hold such immense value to me.

Yes, I'm 40. The road to get here has had bumps, grooves, hair-raising turns, fun, love, smooth sailing, and everything in between. It's been a journey, but it's my journey. I'm good with all that God has blessed me with and carried me through in my 40 years. The outpouring of fun and love over the past few weeks are all just icing on the top.
