Random Blatherings

Another week gone by. What did we do this week?

~Started out the week with yet another antibiotic for Matteo and four days of missed school. Crazy, poor little guy has been sick for over two weeks. The nasty cold turned into an ear infection that then settled on a sinus infection. The little man is better, should be back at school tomorrow.

~We had our roof replaced this week. It was time - the house is 20 years old and it made good sense. Not to mention, we negotiated a good price due to the time of year, availability of the contractors and a cool neighbor who is also doing their roof at the same time. It's done, looks great. The crew was professional, courteous, and did a great job cleaning up the mess every day.

Funny side note: Out of all the things that goes with replacing the roof -a huge roll off dumpster in the driveway, tons of noise (especially being at home with sick kids all week), the materials and various trucks in front of the house, the kids were awe-struck by one fact: The crew taking their shirts off on the hot sunny days this week. Oh yes - this was a daily topic of conversation. "Hey Mom, AHHHH! There they go again, working without shirts on!". It is so evident by this odd sighting that we do not live in a place filled with very hot days and humidity. Cracked me up.

~ Dominick's kindergarten class won the pizza party for reading the most minutes during an 8 week eager reader program. Woo hoo!

~St. Patrick's Day - we celebrate it. We have a few decorations for the kitchen, enjoy green food and talk alot about leprechauns, and just have fun with it. On this St. Patrick's Day the kids devoured green pancakes and green milk for breakfast. Of course, there were shamrock cookies too! I made my 'once year dish' of corned beef in order to have true Reuben's for dinner that night. Oh, so bad for my health, I'm sure. However, it tastes soooo good and we do it once year. No guilt for this one!

Oh - and the best thing - playing musical chairs after dinner. I am thinking the kids will now remember this as a way that 'we celebrate family holidays', as Matteo always says after something fun on a holiday. Traditions - we're starting them early and often!

This is from St. Patrick's Day 2007. I love this photo of our little people. We made these hats after Matteo had made one in preschool. Good times for me - craft time for the kids. Love it. Our kiddo's still have what I call 'toddler chub' in this picture. Love that.

~ Started First Communion classes for Matteo this week. More good faith filled stuff for me and our family. Good for the soul.

~ Don went to Arizona on Friday morning. It's been the kids and me flying solo. We had two baseball and two basketball practices yesterday - all overlapping, to be done by 1:30pm. Whew - with the help of a cool friend, the boys were able to be where they needed to be and Anna spent the time with me on the sidelines watching Matteo & D do their sport thing. It was a good morning, actually. It was hectic, but I enjoyed watching the boys play sports, seeing them happy and having fun. It was busy, but busy for them felt good yesterday.

We wrapped up the day by watching the UW/NM basketball game and eating pizza in the afternoon. Such a big blowout of the game. It made it more fun for the boys, I think. Such fun to see the boys really get into watching the game and the NCAA tournament stuff. Good times.

~ Last but not least, we did some baking yesterday evening. Because Anna was such a good sport during the driving/sports craziness, I indulged her with some baking fun. It all started with a comment from her: Early yesterday morning, on the way to Dominick's basketball game, Anna informed me from the backseat that Sunday is Pink Monkey's Birthday. Oh yes, Pink Monkey has had a birthday before, a few months ago. So, I thought it would be fun to let her have some fun on Sunday with her favorite thing - Pink Monday.

After lunch today we all sang to Pink Monkey and enjoyed some psychedelic rainbow cupcakes. Got the recipe from Family Magazine. It was fun to laugh and sing with the kids. It really was all about the cupcakes for them - too cute!

~ Despite all the crazy happenings this week and Don being out of town, I'm mananging to find some peace. I have been up early spending some time in my journal and doing bible study stuff, which is good for me. I'm also trying to get a better handle on my health and dietary stuff - perpetually concerned with avoiding Type II Diabetes and other health issues. I've been reading a few books about this and it's been good. Next appt is in a few months for all of that 'check-up' stuff related to it.

~ Loved the time with the kids yesterday. It was all about them and fun things for them to do. We're all a bit tired today, came home from church and are being lounge lizards. The boys have been doing lego fun, reading, and I can hear Anna and the boys listening to a tape of "Charlie and The Glass Elevator". Good stuff, anything related to Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.

~ Got the chance to have one of my favorite late night conversations with Michelle. She called on Friday night, around 8pmish our time. Which meant it was 11pmish for her. We babbled for over an hour about everything. We talked about my Dad and his ever-secretive health issues. We talked kid stuff - can't believe Giana is going to be in first grade next year. Laughed about our oldest niece, Stephanie, posting a facebook video of Giana and Max playing hide-n-seek. The 2 minute video ended with 4 year old Max hitting Giana in the face with a nerf gun. Made me laugh and get weepy all at the same time. The idea that Stephanie, who is Matt's oldest daughter, babysits often. The way Giana was talking to Stephanie about fire drills at school while waiting for Max to find her. Too sweet for me. Made me wish we lived down the street. Moments like this, random conversations with my sister, make me soooo appreciative she is my sister. Love ya, Michelle.

It's been a good week, albeit a tiring one. I am glad the roof is done, hopeful that Matteo will go back to school tomorrow and be done with the germs, and hope to find more peace and quiet in the next week.

We're going to head out for a little walk around Yellow Lake this afternoon and settle in for a quiet, early dinner.
